The “Expert Digital Marketing” Lie Nobody’s Calling Out

Every digital marketing agency in Newcastle claims to be expert. Thickrope’s no exception, we say it too. The difference is, most of them won’t tell you how to verify it.

Here’s the uncomfortable truth: expertise in digital marketing has become a meaningless word. Anyone with a Google Ads account and a willingness to promise results can get a listing on Google. They can build a website that looks*\ credible. They can drop E-E-A-T signals all over their site. But none of that actually proves they know how to spend your money well.

So let’s tackle the real question: How do you actually tell the difference?

The Three Things “Expert” Should Mean (and Usually Doesn’t)

1. They can prove incrementality, not just activity

Watch what happens when you ask a digital marketing agency to explain their last campaign. Most will say something like:

  • “We generated 10,000 impressions.”
  • “We got 250 clicks.”
  • “We got 8 leads.”

None of that tells you whether they drove those results, or whether you’d have gotten them anyway. A truly expert digital marketer knows the difference between correlation and causation, and won’t pretend vanity metrics prove success. They’ll talk about:

  • Test budgets and control groups
  • Incrementality testing (measuring what an extra pound of spend actually produces)
  • Whether the cost per acquisition improved or just the volume went up
  • What metrics matter to your business, not what sounds impressive in a pitch

The best agencies track first-party data and understand that “more clicks” without a rise in profitable conversions is just expensive noise.

2. They adjust when the data shifts, and admit when they’re wrong

Digital marketing isn’t stable. Google changes its algorithms. Privacy regulations tighten (think GDPR, CCPA). Platform performance shifts. Consumer behaviour swerves.

Actual experts don’t cling to strategies that stop working. They notice fast, tell you what’s happening, and pivot without drama. They also don’t panic. They understand that:

  • Some slowdowns are temporary
  • Some require strategic rethinking
  • Some require budget reallocation, not just optimisation within the same channel

The red flag? An agency that blames external factors, then charges you more to “fix” the problem they didn’t see coming.

3. They translate what they do into your business language, not theirs

A digital marketing expert should never need you to understand SEO, PPC, impression share ratios, or quality scores. Yes, they understand all that deeply. But when they report to you, they should speak in the language of your P&L:

  • How much did a customer cost to acquire this month?
  • What’s the lifetime value of the ones we got?
  • If we doubled spend, what would we expect to earn back?
  • Which channels are returning money fastest?
  • What’s our hurdle rate, and are we clearing it?

If a meeting ends and you felt impressed but slightly confused, you didn’t get expertise. You got theatre.

How to Verify This Before You Hire

Ask for case studies with actual numbers. Not “we increased traffic by 40%”, that’s rubbish. Try: “We acquired 150 customers at a £47 CAC when the client’s target was £60. The client had previously spent £200k with another agency on a £95 CAC. At year-end, they’d achieved a 3.2:1 ROAS.” Real? It includes context, benchmarks, and business language.

Request a live audit of your own business. A real expert will spend 1–2 hours looking at your website, your current campaigns, your reviews, your conversion funnel, and your competitive landscape. They’ll tell you, in writing, what’s actually hurting your performance and what would meaningfully move the needle. You shouldn’t have to pay for this. If they won’t do it, they don’t actually know how to diagnose your problem, which means they’ll be guessing when they’re managing your spend.

Ask how they stay current. The digital landscape moves fast. An expert marketer should be able to name specific industry changes they’ve noticed in the last 3 months, and show you exactly how those changes affected their strategy or client campaigns. If they say they’re “too busy to keep up,” that’s a neon warning sign.

Check their actual results against benchmarks. Don’t just ask how many leads they generated. Ask:

  • What was the cost per lead, and how does it compare to the industry average for your sector?
  • What was the quality of those leads (conversion rate to paying customer)?
  • What happened to that cost over time? Did it improve or degrade?

An expert will know these numbers cold. They’ll also have a point of view on whether their performance was good, mediocre, or room-for-improvement.

Look for named people, not just the brand. Google’s E-E-A-T framework is explicit on this: expertise lives in people, not just logos. A real expert agency will have individuals with verifiable credentials, published work, and a track record. You should be able to find them online outside the agency website, not because they’re famous, but because they’ve actually built something, written about it, or won industry recognition for it.

The Price of Fake Expertise

Here’s what bad “expertise” costs you:

In the UK, the average SME spends £500–£3,000 per month on digital marketing. If you’re working with an agency that’s optimising activity instead of outcomes, you’re probably wasting 30–50% of that. Over a year, that’s £1,800–£18,000 in sunk spend on campaigns that look busy but don’t move the business.

Worse? You lose time. Every month an underperforming strategy runs is a month you could’ve been fixing it.

What We Do Differently (And How to Tell)

At Thickrope, we put our numbers where our mouth is. Here’s what that looks like:

  • We audit your business first, free, before you decide to work with us. Not because we’re nice. Because we can’t sell you a strategy without understanding your actual problem.
  • Every client has a written, number-based benchmark. We’re aiming at something measurable, not “more leads” or “better rankings.”
  • We report in your language: CAC, ROAS, conversion rate, revenue impact. Not impressions.
  • If the data says we’re wrong, we pivot. You’ll see it happening in real time. No surprises at the end of the month.
  • When something in the market shifts, you’ll hear from us first. Not later.

We’re not perfect. Markets are weird. But we won’t pretend activity is achievement, and we won’t let you spend money on campaigns that aren’t moving the needle.

Your Next Step

If you’re spending on digital marketing right now and you’re not 100% sure it’s working, or you’re shopping around and you want to know if a potential partner actually knows their stuff, book a free audit. We’ll spend an hour looking at your business, your current performance, and your competitors. You’ll walk away with a written diagnosis of what’s actually broken and what would move the needle.

No pitch. No jargon. Just the truth about where you stand and what it would take to improve it.
